When a husband and wife start planning a family, one of the first questions is often which vitamins to take. Many couples look at fertility supplements in the UAE and find shelves full of sachets and capsules with big promises. The honest answer is simpler: one supplement is clearly recommended for the wife, and the evidence for most of the rest is limited.
That single clear step is folic acid. The World Health Organization (WHO) advises all women to take 400 micrograms a day from the moment they begin trying for a baby until week 12 of pregnancy. Beyond that, a healthy routine for both of you matters more than any one product.
This guide explains what is well supported, what is not, and when it is time to speak to a doctor.
Preconception vitamins for the wife: what is well supported
Preconception vitamins are the vitamins taken in the months before pregnancy. For the wife, the main ones are:
- Folic acid. WHO recommends 400 micrograms daily from when you start trying until 12 weeks of pregnancy; many doctors suggest starting three months ahead. It lowers the risk of neural tube problems in the baby, such as spina bifida. It is hard to get enough from food alone.
- A higher dose for some women. Women with diabetes, a high body weight, a past pregnancy affected by a neural tube problem, or who take certain medicines may need a higher dose. This must be prescribed by a doctor.
- Vitamin D. Many people in the UAE spend most of the day indoors with air conditioning, which limits sun exposure. Ask your doctor whether you need a supplement. The European Food Safety Authority sets the safe upper limit for adults, including pregnant women, at 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) a day.
- Avoid extra vitamin A (retinol). Too much can harm the baby's development, and the European Food Safety Authority advises women planning a pregnancy not to eat liver products. Avoid vitamin A supplements, fish liver oils and ordinary multivitamins containing retinol. Choose a product made for pregnancy planning, and check the label.
A combined pregnancy-planning multivitamin can be convenient, as it usually covers folic acid and vitamin D in one tablet.
Supplements for the husband: what the evidence says
Many products are aimed at husbands, often with zinc, folic acid, L-carnitine, coenzyme Q10 and other antioxidants. It is fair to say the evidence here is limited.
- A 2022 Cochrane review of antioxidant supplements for men found the evidence was of low to very low certainty. Some results looked promising, but the studies were small and often poorly reported.
- A large US trial (FAZST, published in 2020) gave over 1,100 men folic acid and zinc for six months. It found no improvement in the chance of a live birth compared with a dummy tablet.
So a supplement for the husband may be a reasonable choice for some couples, but it should not replace a medical check if you have been trying for a while. Search terms like Fertilex UAE or Carnivita UAE bring up popular options; it is worth asking a pharmacist what each contains and whether it suits you.
Comparing common ingredients
| Ingredient | Who it is usually for | Strength of evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Folic acid | Wife, before and in early pregnancy | Strong, recommended by health services |
| Vitamin D | Wife (and often both) | Recommended in pregnancy; useful if levels are low |
| Zinc and folic acid | Husband | A large trial showed no benefit for live births |
| Antioxidant blends (CoQ10, L-carnitine, vitamins C and E) | Husband | Low to very low certainty |
| Inositol | Some women, often on doctor advice | Limited; ask your doctor |
Healthy habits that help you both
Supplements work best alongside everyday habits. For both husband and wife:
- Eat a varied diet with vegetables, fruit, whole grains, pulses, fish and lean protein.
- Aim for a healthy weight, as being very under or over weight can make it harder to conceive.
- Stop smoking, including shisha and vaping.
- Stay active, but move indoors or to early mornings when the UAE heat builds.
- Review any regular medicines with your doctor before you start trying.
- Keep up with routine health checks, such as blood sugar and thyroid tests, if your doctor advises them.
Choosing fertility supplements in the UAE safely
If you decide to buy fertility supplements in the UAE, a few simple checks help:
- Buy from a licensed pharmacy so you know the product is registered.
- Read the label for vitamin A (retinol) if the product is for the wife.
- Do not double up. Taking two multivitamins can push some nutrients too high.
- Follow the label or ask your pharmacist about how much to take.
- Tell your doctor about every supplement either of you takes, especially before any fertility tests or treatment.

When to see a doctor or pharmacist
Medical guidance generally suggests a husband and wife should see a doctor together if:
- You have been trying for 12 months without pregnancy and the wife is under 35.
- You have been trying for 6 months and the wife is 35 or older.
- The wife is over 40, in which case it is sensible to go sooner.
See a doctor straight away, without waiting, if:
- The wife has very irregular cycles, or no cycles at all.
- Either of you has a known medical condition, has had cancer treatment, or takes long-term medicine.
- There have been two or more pregnancy losses.
- The wife has severe or ongoing stomach pain.
A pharmacist can help you check labels, avoid doubling up on vitamins, and point you to a clinic.
Frequently asked questions
When should I start taking folic acid?
Ideally about three months before you start trying for a baby. Health services advise 400 micrograms a day until week 12 of pregnancy. If you are already pregnant and have not started, begin as soon as you can.
Do fertility supplements work?
For the wife, folic acid is clearly recommended to protect the baby's development. For most other ingredients, especially those marketed to husbands, the evidence is limited and of low certainty. A supplement is not a substitute for a medical check if pregnancy has not happened after the usual time.
Should my husband take a supplement too?
Some couples choose to, and a balanced multivitamin is generally safe at label doses. However, a large trial found that zinc and folic acid for men did not improve live birth rates. A healthy diet, a healthy weight and not smoking are well-supported steps for him.
Can I take a normal multivitamin when planning a pregnancy?
It is better to choose one made for pregnancy planning. Some ordinary multivitamins contain vitamin A (retinol), which is best avoided in pregnancy. Ask your pharmacist to check the label with you.
