A good glucometer is one you find easy to use, that gives readings you trust, and whose test strips you can buy without difficulty. If you are choosing a glucometer in the UAE, the ongoing cost and availability of strips matter as much as the meter itself.
Home blood sugar checks help people with diabetes see how food, activity, illness and medicines affect their numbers. Your doctor will tell you how often to test and what your target range is.
This guide compares the main options, explains what affects accuracy, and covers the steps for a reliable reading.
Meter, strips and lancets: what you actually need
A blood sugar monitoring kit has three parts that work together.
- The meter. Reads a small drop of blood and shows the result.
- Test strips. Each test uses one strip. Strips are made for a specific meter, so they are not interchangeable between brands or even between some models of the same brand.
- Lancing device and lancets. The device pricks the fingertip. Lancets are single-use needles that fit it.
Because you will buy strips again and again, check the strip price before you choose a meter. A cheap meter with expensive strips can cost more over a year.
Comparing the main types
| Type | How it works | Good for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard meter | Finger-prick, strip read in seconds | Most people who test a few times a day or week | Lowest ongoing cost |
| Meter with app or Bluetooth | Same as above, sends results to a phone | People who like digital logs or share results with a doctor | Needs a phone set-up |
| Large-display meter | Bigger numbers and simple buttons | Older adults or weaker eyesight | Usually fewer features |
| Continuous glucose monitor (CGM) | A small sensor on the skin reads glucose levels through the day | People advised by their doctor to track trends closely | Sensors need regular replacement; ask your doctor if it suits you |
Popular brands in the UAE include Accu-Chek, Contour and OneTouch. Accu-Chek in the UAE comes in several models, such as Active, Guide and Instant, each with its own strips. If you already use OneTouch in the UAE, stay with the strips made for your exact meter model. Availability varies, so check stock before you run low.
Accuracy: what to look for
Most meters sold today are designed to meet the international standard ISO 15197:2013. It requires most results to fall within about 15% of a laboratory value. In practice, how you test also has a big effect.
Several things can affect a reading:
- strips that are out of date or have been left open to air
- extreme heat or humidity, such as leaving a kit in a parked car in summer
- dehydration or anaemia
- some substances, including high doses of vitamin C and paracetamol (acetaminophen) with certain meters.
It is also wise to test with control solution when you open a new strip pack, after dropping the meter, or when a result does not match how you feel. Never share a meter or lancing device with another person, even within the family.
Glucometer price and strip costs in the UAE
At BMG Pharmacy, the glucometer price in the UAE starts at around AED 150 for a starter kit that includes the meter, strips and lancets, at the time of writing. Glucose test strips in the UAE usually cost around AED 80 to 120 for a pack of 50, depending on the brand. Prices may change, and offer packs are often available.
When comparing, work out the cost per test and how many tests a month your doctor has asked you to do.
How to get an accurate reading
These steps follow standard advice for finger-prick testing.
- Wash your hands with soap and warm water and dry them well. Sugar on the skin from food can raise a result.
- Warm your hands or let them hang down for a moment if blood flow is low.
- Prick the side of your fingertip, which tends to hurt less than the pad.
- Apply the drop of blood to the strip as the meter instructs.
- Record the result with a note of the time and anything relevant, such as a meal or exercise.
- Throw away the lancet and strip safely.
Keep strips in their closed container, away from heat and moisture. Many meters in the UAE show results in mg/dL, while some show mmol/L. To convert, multiply mmol/L by 18. Make sure you know which unit your meter uses before comparing with your doctor's targets.
If you are planning to fast in Ramadan, speak to your doctor several weeks before. A finger-prick test is widely accepted as not breaking the fast, and regular checks help you fast more safely.

When to see a doctor or pharmacist
Speak to your doctor if:
- your readings are often outside the target range you were given
- you have low blood sugar episodes often, at night, or without warning signs
- you feel very thirsty, pass urine often or feel unusually tired along with high readings
- you are unwell and your readings keep rising.
Low blood sugar is commonly defined as below 3.9 mmol/L (70 mg/dL), and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) advises people fasting in Ramadan to break the fast at that level. Signs the IDF lists include sweating, shaking, a fast heartbeat, dizziness and irritability. Follow the plan your doctor gave you. Call 998 for an ambulance if someone becomes confused, drowsy or unconscious and cannot safely swallow.
A pharmacist can help you set up a new meter and check your technique.
Frequently asked questions
Which glucometer is most accurate?
Most meters from established brands are designed to the same international accuracy standard. Differences in everyday use often come from technique, strip storage and out-of-date strips. Choose a meter you find easy to use and follow its instructions carefully.
Can I use any test strips with my meter?
No. Strips are made for specific meters, and using the wrong ones can give wrong results or no result at all. Check the meter name on the strip box before you buy.
Do I need a prescription for a glucometer in the UAE?
Home glucometers and strips are sold over the counter in UAE pharmacies. Your doctor should still advise you on how often to test and what your targets are.
Why is my reading different from my lab test?
Home meters and lab tests measure in slightly different ways, and small differences are normal. A finger-prick taken at a different time from a blood draw will also differ. If the gap is large, test with control solution and bring your meter to your next appointment.
