Collagen supplements: powder, tablets or drinks?

Collagen is the main structural protein in skin, and the body makes less of it as we age. That is why collagen supplements are among the most popular beauty products in the UAE. They come as powders, tablets, capsules, ready-to-drink shots and gummies, and the prices vary widely.

The honest answer on results is that the evidence is modest and mixed. Some trials suggest small improvements in skin hydration and elasticity, but recent reviews have questioned how strong those findings are. If you decide to try collagen supplements in the UAE, the form you choose matters less than taking it regularly, checking the source on the label and keeping your expectations realistic.

Collagen supplements in the UAE: what is in them

Most supplements contain hydrolysed collagen, also called collagen peptides. This is collagen broken down into small pieces so it dissolves easily. It is usually made from cow hide or bone (bovine), fish skin and scales (marine), or occasionally pork (porcine).

When you swallow collagen, your digestive system breaks it down into amino acids and small peptides, as it does with any protein. Harvard's Nutrition Source points out that the body then uses these building blocks wherever it needs them. Whether they are directed to the skin is still being studied.

Some products add vitamin C, biotin or hyaluronic acid. Vitamin C is needed for the body to make its own collagen, which is why it is often added.

What does the research show?

The research picture has shifted in recent years:

  • Earlier reviews were positive. A 2023 review of randomised trials, published in a peer-reviewed journal, found that hydrolysed collagen may improve skin hydration and elasticity over around 8 to 12 weeks.
  • A 2025 review raised doubts. A meta-analysis in The American Journal of Medicine found an overall benefit, but when it looked only at studies not funded by companies, the effect disappeared.
  • A 2026 update disagreed again. A newer review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reported that independent trials showed effects similar to sponsored ones.

In short, collagen may help some people a little, but the evidence is not settled. Many studies are small, short and funded by the industry. Collagen also does not replace the basics that protect your skin's own collagen: daily sunscreen in the UAE sun, not smoking, enough sleep and a balanced diet with enough protein.

Powder, tablets or drinks: how they compare

The form mostly affects convenience, taste and how much collagen you get in each serving.

FormTypical servingProsCons
PowderOne or two scoopsLarger amount per serving, mixes into drinks or food, often best valueNeeds mixing, some have a taste
Tablets and capsulesSeveral a dayEasy to carry, no tasteSmaller amount per tablet, so you may need to take many
Drinks and shotsOne small bottle or vialVery convenient, pre-flavouredUsually the most expensive, may contain sugar or sweeteners
GummiesTwo or morePleasant to takeLow collagen content, often added sugar

Popular choices include Vital Proteins collagen in the UAE, which is mainly sold as unflavoured powder, and NeoCell Super Collagen, which comes as both powder and tablets. Whichever you choose, follow the label or ask your pharmacist about how much to take.

Halal, bovine and marine: checking the source

For many families in the UAE, the source of collagen is as important as the form. Check the label for:

  • Animal source. Bovine, marine (fish) or porcine. Avoid porcine collagen if you follow a halal diet.
  • Halal certification. Bovine collagen is only considered halal if it comes from halal-slaughtered animals, so look for a recognised halal logo on the pack.
  • Marine collagen in the UAE is often chosen by people who prefer a non-meat source. It is not suitable for anyone with a fish allergy.
  • Capsule shell. Some capsules are made with gelatin, which also has an animal source.

If the label is unclear, ask a BMG pharmacist. We can check the product details for you.

Who should be careful

Collagen is generally well tolerated, and Harvard's review notes that studies have not shown notable side effects. Still, take care if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding, as there is little safety research in this group
  • Have a fish, shellfish or egg allergy, since some products use these sources
  • Have kidney disease or have been told to limit protein
  • Need to watch your sugar intake, in which case check gummies and drinks for added sugar
  • Take other supplements, as some collagen products also contain biotin or vitamins

Supplements are not checked for effectiveness in the same way as medicines, so choose products from established brands sold through a licensed pharmacy.

When to see a doctor or pharmacist

Collagen is a beauty supplement, not a treatment for skin or joint disease. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist if:

  • You notice a rash, itching, swelling or stomach upset after starting a supplement. Stop taking it.
  • You have sudden swelling of the face or lips or difficulty breathing. Seek emergency help.
  • Your skin changes quickly, such as new patches, sores or a mole that changes shape or colour
  • Your hair, skin or nails have changed alongside tiredness or weight changes, which may point to a medical cause
  • You take regular medicines or have a long-term condition and want to check a supplement is suitable

Frequently asked questions

Do collagen supplements actually work?

Some trials show small improvements in skin hydration and elasticity after a few months, but recent reviews disagree about how reliable those results are. Collagen may help some people modestly. It will not replace sunscreen, sleep and a balanced diet.

Which is better, collagen powder or tablets?

Powders usually give more collagen per serving and are often better value. Tablets and capsules are more convenient but you may need several a day. Choose the form you will take consistently.

Is marine collagen halal?

Collagen from fish is generally considered halal. For bovine collagen, look for a recognised halal certification on the pack, and avoid porcine sources if you follow a halal diet. Ask your pharmacist if the label is unclear.

Can I take collagen during Ramadan?

Yes, you can take collagen between iftar and suhoor. Powders mix easily into a drink or yoghurt at either meal. Follow the label for how much to take.
