Magnesium glycinate, citrate or oxide: what is the difference?

Magnesium is a mineral your body uses for hundreds of everyday jobs, including turning food into energy and keeping muscles, nerves and bones working normally. Supplements come in several forms, and the name on the label tells you what the magnesium is attached to. Magnesium glycinate in the UAE is one of the most popular choices, alongside citrate and oxide.

The main differences are how much magnesium each tablet holds, how easily the body may absorb it, and how likely it is to upset your stomach. No single form is right for everyone. This guide compares them in plain terms so you can talk to your pharmacist with confidence.

Most healthy people can get enough magnesium from food. A supplement may be worth considering if your diet is limited, but it is wise to check with a pharmacist first, especially if you take regular medicines.

What magnesium does and how much you need

Magnesium helps the body make protein, control blood sugar and blood pressure, and keep the heartbeat steady. It is found in leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains and some fortified cereals.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which advises many countries, sets these adequate intakes for adults:

  • Men: 350 mg a day.
  • Women: 300 mg a day.

For supplements, EFSA sets an upper limit of 250 mg a day for adults. This limit is for magnesium added to supplements, water or foods, not magnesium found naturally in food. Taking more can cause loose stools in some people.

The main types of magnesium supplements

Magnesium cannot be taken on its own, so it is bound to another substance. That second substance gives each form its name.

  • Magnesium glycinate (also called bisglycinate). Magnesium bound to glycine, an amino acid. It is often described as gentle on the stomach. However, there is little good research comparing it directly with other forms.
  • Magnesium citrate. Magnesium bound to citric acid. It dissolves well in water. In small studies, citrate was absorbed better than oxide. It can loosen the stools, and it is also used as a laxative.
  • Magnesium oxide. Contains a high amount of magnesium per tablet, so tablets can be smaller or fewer. Small studies suggest less of it is absorbed than citrate. It is also used in some antacid and laxative products.
  • Other forms. You may also see chloride, lactate, aspartate or malate. One clinical review describes chloride, lactate and aspartate as well absorbed, and citrate, which dissolves well, as better absorbed than oxide.

Magnesium glycinate in the UAE: how it compares with citrate and oxide

Here is a simple side-by-side view. Evidence on absorption comes mostly from small studies, so treat these as general patterns rather than firm rules.

How to choose the best magnesium supplement in the UAE

There is no single best magnesium supplement in the UAE for every person. These questions can help you decide:

  • How sensitive is your stomach? If other forms upset you, glycinate is a common alternative, though evidence is limited.
  • How much elemental magnesium is in each dose? The label should show the amount of magnesium itself, not just the weight of the whole compound. Use this number to compare products.
  • Will you take it every day? A form and tablet size you can manage easily matters.
  • Are there added ingredients? Some products add vitamin B6 or other nutrients. Check these do not double up with other supplements you take.
  • Capsule, tablet, powder or spray? Magnesium glycinate in the UAE comes in several of these formats. Powders can be mixed into water. Capsules and tablets are easy to carry.

Follow the label, or ask your pharmacist how to take it. If you are looking for magnesium glycinate in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman, our branches and online store can help you compare options.

Magnesium glycinate and sleep: what the evidence says

Many people buy magnesium glycinate for sleep or to help them relax. The research here is still limited. A 2021 review of three small trials in older adults found magnesium may have helped people fall asleep slightly faster, but the authors judged the evidence to be low quality. There is not enough evidence to say that one form of magnesium is better than another for sleep.

If you have trouble sleeping for more than a few weeks, it is worth speaking to a doctor rather than relying on a supplement.

When to see a doctor or pharmacist

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking magnesium if you:

  • Have kidney disease, as the kidneys clear extra magnesium from the body
  • Take regular medicines, including some antibiotics, osteoporosis medicines, water tablets or acid-reducing medicines, as magnesium can affect how they work or may need to be taken at a different time
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Want to give magnesium to a child

Stop taking it and get medical advice if you have:

  • Diarrhoea, stomach cramps or nausea that does not settle
  • Muscle weakness, a slow or uneven heartbeat, low blood pressure or unusual drowsiness
  • Ongoing muscle cramps, twitching or tiredness, which can have many causes and are worth checking

Frequently asked questions

Is magnesium glycinate better than magnesium citrate?

Not necessarily. Citrate has more research behind its absorption, while glycinate is often chosen because people find it gentle on the stomach. The best choice depends on your needs and how you tolerate it, so ask your pharmacist.

Can I take magnesium glycinate every day?

Many people take a magnesium supplement daily. Stay within the label directions and the EFSA upper limit of 250 mg a day from supplements for adults, unless your doctor advises otherwise. Check with a pharmacist if you have a health condition or take medicines.

What is the difference between magnesium glycinate and bisglycinate?

These names are usually used for the same thing. Bisglycinate means each magnesium is bound to two glycine molecules, which is how glycinate supplements are normally made. Check the label for the amount of elemental magnesium.

Is magnesium oxide a bad choice?

No. Magnesium oxide holds a lot of magnesium per tablet and is often good value. Small studies suggest less of it is absorbed, and it can loosen the stools, so some people prefer other forms.
